AC TRANSIT REMEMBERS THE LIFE & LEGACY OF ALAMEDA COUNTY SUPERVISOR WILMA CHAN

A mother, grandmother, advocate, and public service trailblazer

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District (AC Transit) Board of Directors wishes to extend our transit district’s heartfelt condolences to the family, colleagues, and constituents of Alameda County Supervisor Wilma Chan.

Supervisor Chan lived a life undaunted by race or gender but instead used those social and societal barriers to demonstrate, indeed, one person can make a difference. As the first Asian American elected to the Alameda County Board of Supervisors and later the first Asian American Majority Leader of the California State Assembly, Supervisor Chan did not settle for the title of history maker. Instead, she used four decades in elected office as a platform to write and champion legislation with a single theme: protection of the marginalized. During her historical public service tenure, Supervisor Chan sent a resounding message to both the people of Alameda County and our state that reinventing public policy should be our collective call to action and that the fair and equitable distribution of public services is achievable.

The AC Transit Board of Directors shares Supervisor Chan's template of protecting the marginalized. Each month, our Board assembles with the mission of the equitable design and delivery of public transit that ensures the disabled, people of color, immigrants, and children are no longer depicted as marginalized communities, but through thoughtful transit, given the opportunity to excel and contribute to Alameda County.
